The Krakow Dance Theatre announces an open call for the Dance Critics Residency program

 

 

What the DANCE CRITICS RESIDENCY entails

 

 

The Dance Critics Residency is a five day workshop organized by Krakow Dance Theatre as a part of Beyond Fronta: Bridging Periphery project. It will give the participants an opportunity to get acquainted with some of the concepts of contemproary performing arts criticism. The mentors will lead the discussions about how we see/experience art, how we talk about art and how we write about art – with the focus on contemporary dance. The participants will reflect together on what dance criticism entails today: how to look at dance of different genres and in different formats/media, and how to reflect it in various contexts. They will watch the performances, discuss and write about the performances seen.

 

 

Who are the mentors

 

 

The workshop will be lead by established professionals, dance critics, theoreticians and editors of dance/theatre journals: Pia Brezavšček (Maska Magazine) from Slovenia, and Alicja Muller (Didaskalia. Theatre Journal) from Poland. Below you can find more about the mentors.

 

 

Who can apply

 

 

The application is open to young writers and critics at the beginning of their careers, who have already written and published some texts on contemporary performing arts and who come from countries of Beyond Front@: Bridging Periphery: Poland, Hungary, Slovenia, Croatia, Romania and Sweden.

 

 

The applicants should be able to read, converse András write in English.

The selection will be made by the organizing partners by 23th June 2024. Applicants will be notified about the decision by an e-mail to the address from which the application was sent.

More about the mentors

Pia Brezavšček is a cultural worker, editor, publicist, reviewer, theatrologist and dramaturge. She studied art history and philosophy and is a PhD candidate in Philosophy at the Faculty of Arts at the University of Ljubljana. She was the funding member and the editor of the www.neodvisni.art national independent performing arts review website, established in 2019. She is the editor-in-chief of the bilingual performing arts journal Maska. In 2012, she was awarded the national contemporary dance association Ksenija Hribar Award for dance reviews. From 2017-2020, she was the president of the Association for Contemporary Dance Slovenia. She is teaching the course Dance, politics, sociology at the Academy for dance Alma Mater Europeana Slovenia. Her dramaturgy work includes collaborating with artists Bara Kolenc, Magdalena Reiter and Saška Rakef.

Alicja Muller is a researcher and dance critic with a Ph.D. in humanities. She conducts courses on anthropology and aesthetics of movement, and cultural studies, and issues of contemporary culture at the Faculty of Polish Studies at the Jagiellonian University, Krakow, Poland. She is the author of the book „Sobątańczenie: Między choreografią a narracją” (Krakow 2017) and has published in journals such as „Didaskalia,” „Teksty Drugie,” and „Czas Kultury.” She received a scholarship from the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage (2023); she is a laureate of the Andrzej Żurowski competition for young theater critics (2014) and of the Institute of Theatre’s competition for the best master’s thesis in the field of knowledge about theater, spectacle, and performance (2014/2015). As researcher and educator, she has collaborated with organizations such as the Off Camera Foundation, Performat Foundation, Art Stations Foundation, Krakow Dance Theatre, and Cricoteka.She has conducted numerous workshops on writing about dance and choreography and has published dozens of reviews and essays on performing arts.

 

 

The Dance Critics Residency is organized as a part of the Beyond Fronta: Bridging Periphery is a Creative Europe project (2023-2026) created by Közép-Európa Táncszínház / Central Europe Dance Theatre (Hungary), Bunker (Slovenia), Hrvatski institut za pokret i ples – HIPP (Croatia), Krakowski Teatr Tańca (Poland), M STUDIO (Romania) and Vitlycke – Centre for Performing Arts (Sweden) to foster local development of the contemporary dance fields.
